Letter of Recommendation (LOR): Types, Content & Common mistakes

LOR is a document that endorses a student’s skills, knowledge and achievements throughout their academics. The recommendation letters are generally written by professors, teachers or university counsellors and or Industry professionals the student worked with. The letter assesses the student’s overall personality and helps the admission committee to understand more about the applicant.

Types of Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

LOR can be categorised into the following two categories:

  • Academic LOR: An Academic LOR is a recommendation letter provided by a faculty of your previous academic institution. Academic LOR should be written in English language and should have the name of the course and university you are applying to. The letter should include contact details such as official phone number and email id of the writer and should be written by the school members. An Academic LOR is generally given by a professor/faculty/HOD/mentor you’ve worked closely with during your academic coursework.

  • Professional LOR: A Professional LOR is provided by the professor, previous employers and co-workers with whom you have worked. It is necessary for students applying for professional courses like MBA, Ph.D., MS and BBA. Professional LOR concentrates on applicant’s capability to work in various environments. It indicates how the survival period of the applicant has been in the association as many international business schools and colleges demand some amount of knowledge.

Content of LOR

There are few points that should be kept in mind while submitting a Letter of Recommendation:

  • Recommender relationship with the student

Common mistakes to avoid while writing LOR

The recommender should not mention any skills or achievements which the student does not have.

  • Ask for recommendation to only those who have interacted with you recently in a professional and academic capacity.

  • Approach recommender before 3-4 weeks advance as the professionals might have a tight schedule. Make sure you give them proper time and follow-up timely regarding the status of your LOR.

  • It is important that your LOR should consist of both your strengths and weaknesses. However, universities tend to appreciate constructive criticism, and including them only serves to make the recommendation more genuine and sincere.
