IRCC has approved four new English language tests for Student Direct Stream which will be effective from 10th August, 2023. CELPIP General, CAEL, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT Test are the four newly added tests. You can apply to SDS with IELTS Academic scores up to 2 years old. This means you can also use test scores received before 10th August to apply to SDS after the changes take effect on 10th August.
What is the minimum score needed in all the tests?
All the IELTS test takers will no longer need a band score of 6.0 in every component (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) instead they will need an overall band score of 6. This overall band score of 6 will be accepted after 10th August, 2023 too.
According to IRCC, CELPIP General Score must be equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of at least 7 in each of the four language speaking abilities.
The score must be at least 60 in both CAEL and PTE Academic Tests
Educational Testing Service (ETS) TOEFL iBT Test need a minimum score of 83
An overview of CAEL and CELPIP Tests
CAEL Test
The Canadian Academic English Language Test is a 100% computer-delivered test that assesses academic English for entrance into Canadian post-secondary institutions. Test takers are presented with Reading and Listening passages that form the basis of Speaking and Writing tasks.
Test Format
The CAEL assessment consists of two parts. (Test time: Approximately 150 minutes)

Oral language Test (OLT)
The CAEL test is accepted by over 150 post-secondary institutions and professional associations across Canada and internationally.
Test Scoring
You receive a separate score for each of the four components-Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing. The scores are reported on a scale from 10 to 90, and the overall score is an average taking equal weight from each of the component scores.
The fees for the test is $195.00 + tax. The test fees may vary for the CAEL Assessment outside of Canada.
CELPIP Test
The CELPIP Test is fully computer delivered, providing test takers the opportunity to complete all test components in one sitting with no additional appointments, interviews, or test sittings required. CELPIP Test Takers use a computer mouse and keyboard to complete Reading and Writing components of the test, and a computer microphone and headset to complete the Listening and Speaking components.
Test Format
The CELPIP-General L/S Test has two test components: Listening and Speaking
Listening: 47 minutes
Speaking: 20 minutes
Total time allotted for the test is 1 hour 7 minutes.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Students must take the tests in person at regulated and official test centres. Online and remotely proctored tests will not be accepted for applicants in the SDS.
